Everest 1996

Have just started reading 'Into Thin Air' by Jon Krakauer and his first chapter had a lot of people disappearing on Everest in 1996. So I googled it :) and here's what I learnt...

Everest has been a huge thing since it was found to the highest mountain in the world by a begali babu who calculated its height to be 29,002 ft. in 1852. To give due credit, it was the British survey boys who did the initial measurement. Today after some major calculations using GPS, satellites and other fancy equipment the height is found to be 29,029 ft.

Since then it became a British obsession to be the first on top of it. An odd thing the British have to be the first everywhere on earth but anyway, that’s a topic for another day.

BTW Mount Everest was named after George Everest, a Surveyor General of India but it has other local names - Sagarmatha in Nepal, Chomolungma or Qomolangma in Tibet and Zhumulangma in China. All of which mean Mother of Earth or Holy Mother.

It was in 1885 that the Alpine Club in England suggested climbing Everest but it was only in 1921 that George Mallory found a possible route. There are main routes to the top but the SouthEast Ridge route and NorthEast Ridge route are climbed the most. Mallory and Irvine perished in 1924 on Mallory's third attempt and the world will maybe never know if they made it to the top. Mallory's body was found in 1999 and even though the clues indicate they didn't make it; no one knows for sure yet.

After this a lot of attempts were made but it wasn't until 29 years later on 29 May 1953 that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summited Mount Everest via the South route. (Mallory had climbed the North Route). 8 May 1978 saw Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler made the first ascent without supplemental oxygen again from the South.

Moving on... There were a lot of attempts and a lot of people summited after this. Everest started to become a tourist attraction. If you had the time and the money agencies would get you to the top. A lot of travel agencies for the Everest sprung up. This of course got its flak from people like Sir Edmund and others who thought it was disrespectful to nature and the Everest as people who were incapable but could pay were taken to the top.

I agree with this point as it seems at some point people forgot that the Everest and nature are still all powerful and have some tricks up their sleeves. You could pay all you want but if she wants to stop you, you'll never get to the top.

1996 was a disaster year in Everest history. In the year 15 people died and 8 of those died on May 11. A lot of reasons for this and the book 'Into Thin Air' is all about it. But some are that there were too many people on the mountain that day, people didn't follow rules, they refused to bow to the power of Everest and didn't back at the first sign of trouble.
Of course there are different view points to this debacle and many books and documentaries have been written and made.

This is the gist but am providing links below if you want to read more...

Then in 2006 40-odd people passed a climber but no one helped. David Sharp died there on May 15, 2006. This has caused huge controversies about ethics. In the same year 10 days later after the Sharp incident a team found David Mazur and managed to save him.

And so the saga goes on... hundreds of people summit the Everest every year but more than 200 people have lost their lives over the years too. Most of these bodies are still on the mountain and can be seen from the routes - bodies claimed by Everest.

Back Online...

It’s been a while since I've been active on the internet. Guess being away from the city initially broke the thread for me and I never rejoined it. Not that am complaining, its been a good life these last 3-4 years. But now that am constantly in connect to the internet I guess I should keep all those people who are always looking out for me more updated.

So, the plan is that I will learn something new everyday and will blog about it. That way you can expect something new and interesting everyday. And I will put in details of my life too so you'll know what's happening in my life too :)

Oh by the way u can follow me on twitter too... - http://twitter.com/freya3377 I intend to put 1 piece of trivia and 1 quote everyday along with other stuff... so if it’s your thing, follow me :)

PS - Hold me down to this promise please... at least while am still grounded ;)

It'll all pass

Its a definite sign of bad times when you start to be judged by friends and start to feel alone. They are the ones who are to accept you for who you are. Oh yes! they can correct but don't you think they should hear your justification too.
Its sad to lose your friends to the other life. They all just seem to slip away and you are left wondering if your destined to be alone. Everyone seems to have so much to do and you are just standing there watching; a silent observer as life passes you by.
But then again, maybe its meant to be that way. Life moves on after all, it'll all pass.

Happiness...

Happiness... it something I've been chasing since I don't know when. But happiness is like that mirage of a water woman in the desert. I know she holds the secret; its there in her smile, hidden behind the veil. And I follow her as she runs the sand dunes ridges, trying hard to catch up but she's there, right there, just beyond my reach. I don't even know if she's real but everything depends on getting to her. I call out; she stops and as I shade my eyes and look up, the breeze lifts her veil and I catch a glimpse of her smile. I stop in my tracks stunned, the blazing sun seems to have become warm, the sky seems rosy, and the world seems alright again. This is what am looking for but its just momentary for she takes off again and am back in pursuit. I must get to her, else I'll have just these fleeting moments. All of everything depends on reaching her.

Centaurs

Its been a while since my mythology obsessed days but theres still some of the lore lurking in dark corners of my mind. :) So recently when it just so happened that the topic of centaurs came up, I dug around my mind and also did some reading. Here's some stuff I found about these fantastic liminal creatures.

Centaurs

In Greek mythology, the Centaurs (Greek: Κένταυροι) are a race of creatures composed of part human and part horse. In early Attic vase-paintings, they are depicted with the torso of a human joined at the (human's) waist to the horse's withers, where the horse's neck would be.

This half-human and half-animal composition has led many writers to treat them as liminal beings, caught between the two natures, embodied in contrasted myths, and as the embodiment of untamed nature, as in their battle with the Lapiths, or conversely as teachers, like Chiron.

The most common theory holds that the idea of centaurs came from the first reaction of a non-riding culture, as in the Minoan Aegean world, to nomads who were mounted on horses. The theory goes that such riders would appear as half-man, half-animal. (Bernal Díaz del Castillo reported that the Aztecs had this misapprehension about Spanish cavalrymen.)

Centaurs have been made quite famous today in books, movies and games like Harry Potter, Narnia, Artemis Fowl, The Golden Voyage of Sindbad, Xena: Warrior Princess, Guild Wars and Age of Mythology. How much of what is depicted of them is true; is a question. The characters here are based on the age old centaurs but moulded to fit into the expectation of the author. Some of the qualities attributed to them are not very true.

A centaur is one of the symbols associated with the Delta Lambda Phi National Social Fraternity. Whereas centaurs in Greek mythology were generally symbolic of chaos and unbridled passions, DLP's centaur is modelled after Chiron and represents honour, moderation and tempered masculinity.

Chiron

Chiron or Cheiron, in Greek mythology was held as the superlative centaur among his brethren. Centaurs were notorious for being overly indulgent drinkers and carousers, given to violence when intoxicated, and generally uncultured. Chiron, by contrast, was intelligent, civilized and kind. He was known for his knowledge and skill with medicine. A great healer, astrologer, and respected oracle, the last remaining centaur, most revered as a teacher and tutor. Chiron tutored a lot of famous heroes including Achilles and Jason - Captain of the Argonauts.

His nobility is further reflected in the story of his death as Chiron sacrificed his life, allowing humanity to obtain the use of fire. He was honoured with a place in the sky, for the Greeks as the constellation Sagittarius, and in modern times represented by the constellation of the southern hemisphere, Centaurus.

Constellation Centaurus

The Milky Way as seen from the Earth is at its densest as it passes through Sagittarius, as this is where the galactic center lies. Consequently, Sagittarius contains many star clusters and nebulae.

In mythology Sagittarius is often associated with the mythological figure of Chiron. Sagittarius is also associated with the Greco-Roman god Zeus/Jupiter and sometimes the goddess Tyche/Fortuna and the Norse god Thor.

Centaur is also -

A minor planet whose orbit around the Sun lies typically between the orbits of Jupiter and Neptune (5 to 30 AU), though it may extend inward almost as far as Mars (as in the case of Damocles, of the Damocloid family) or outward beyond Neptune (as in the case of 1995SN55, which ranges out to about 40 AU). Because centaurs cross the orbits of one or more of the giant outer planets, they are also known as outer planet crossers.

The orbits of the centaurs are dynamically unstable due to interactions with the giant planets, so they must be objects in transition from a large, outer reservoir of small bodies, believed to be the Kuiper belt, to potentially active, comet-like inner solar system objects. Known sizes range from a few tens to a few hundreds of kilometers across, though there are doubtless many smaller ones awaiting discovery. Their composition is probably intermediate between that of comets and ordinary asteroids; indeed, the first object to be called a centaur, Chiron, is now also classified as a comet following the discovery of a coma around it.

Back in Bangalore...

It's been a while since I posted here. Sorry...

Got back home a few months ago but was just too spaced out to say anything. :) All fine and the trip was great. 8 months and 8000 km stolen from life. ;)

Oh! I know lots of people have asked for write-ups and snaps. I'll do them, I promise but just not right now :)

Life's good as of now and I'm off to enjoy the space a bit more :D

Cheers

A feast for the eyes...

It’s been ages since I saw a gorgeous man, the kind your eyes feast on and just can't get enough of, until...

I saw him from the bus window on my way home standing at the bus stand laughing. It was the sound of his laughter that first made me turn to look and from there on I just couldn't take my eyes off him.

He stood there with a smile playing about his lips and a sparkle in his eye that seemed to light up the world around him. As I sat watching and drinking him in with my eyes, I had a smile playing gently on my lips too. I wondered if he would get on the same bus and he did. He did!!

I was thrilled with my choice of seat once he settled in coz it gave me an unobstructed view of him. I could watch to my hearts content and yet not be caught staring.

Let me describe him for you (am not very good at this but I'll try). He had the skin tone of just the right shade of coffee, neither black nor milky but just the right strength. My kind of coffee :D. A wide forehead with wavy black hair that just hinted at the receding due soon. His nose was beautiful and called for attention. Mind you it wasn't large or pointed and yet neither was it small or podgy. And well shaped cheek bones that showed laugh lines.

As I sat watching he seemed to be smiling secretly and his eyes, oh, they had a life of their own. They had this mischievous sparkle that made you wonder what was going on in his mind. And his lips added to the mischief. Thin and well shaped they were inviting with an outline of a well maintained moustache.

I dragged my eyes away from his face and looked at the rest of him. He had a well toned body which showed muscle and yet no bulges. A lean mean body! His fingers were slim and shapely, the nails cut at the right length and palms clean.

This was one of those rare journeys where I didn't reach out for my book and spent my journey gazing at him. It was with great reluctance that got up to leave at my stop.

As I got off I hoped to see him again and so looked up for a bus number but there was no number just details saying it went from Majestic to Devanahalli and didn't allow usage of the pass for travel. I did get the bus reg. number though – KA 01 FA 828. Now it shouldn't be too difficult, should it; I just have to make sure I travel by this bus. After all he drove the bus; there would be no missing him. ;)
